During our movie set visit to Delivery Man, we were invited to chat with the stars of the movie Vince Vaughn and Cobie Smulders. Cobie Smulders, is one of the stars of the hit television show “How I Met Your Mother” and also starred in the super hero hit, “The Avengers.”
In the Delivery Man, Cobie plays Vince Vaughn’s love interest, who ends up pregnant but doesn’t think he is mature enough to be a real father to their child. What she doesn’t know is that her underachiever boyfriend made anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years earlier which resulted in 533 children. The movie shows his journey that leads him to discover not only his true self but also the father that he could become.
As we were sitting on the set chatting amongst ourselves, we had no idea Cobie had arrived on set. All of sudden, she was just sitting in the front seat of the truck with Vince Vaughn joking around about losing her voice on the set of How I Met Your Mother and they would have to redub her lines.
Listening to them joke around, you could hear in her voice how sick she was but she carried on. It was obvious they had no idea we were listening to them shooting their scenes with the all expletives and jokes (sorry nothing racy or politically incorrect) flying around. Given that she and Vince had been filming off and on for months, it was quite obvious that they had an easy rapport.
Since we were positioned about thirty feet from the front of the truck, Cobie to me actually looked sick but when she came over to talk to us, I was really struck by how pretty she is up close and personal. Seriously, I was sitting right in front of her and I was just dumbfounded by how beautifully luminous her skin is. I love her character on “How I Met Your Mother” but I think that because it’s an ensemble cast and it’s a comedy, she doesn’t get credit for being “beautiful.” Yes, shallow on my part but just an observation.
What struck me about her, just like the Vince Vaughn interview was her natural ability to relate to us and be perfectly comfortable in her responses. There was nothing canned or rote about her answers to us which I found refreshing.
During our interview with Cobie, we peppered her numerous questions about filming in New York, doing research for the movie and how different film work was from her television work.
As a New Yorker, I consider the city another character in my life which is how Cobie felt as well imparting to us how the realism of the city provides a “beautiful backdrop” and “energy” to the movie. For Brooklynites in the house, she gave a special shout out telling us how filming in Brooklyn was her favorite location shoot so far.
In the movie, she plays a cop. In researching the role, she actually met with a female cop who was also a single mother and remarked how hard that would be. “And that was interesting because it’s possibly the hardest job being a single mom, because of your hours, you never know when you will be home. She had a shift where was she was able to pick her kid up from school but if she booked somebody she’d have to stay and file all that paperwork.”
Of course, we could not resist bringing up the differences in filming Delivery Man versus The Avengers. As you might imagine, filming with people is a different dynamic than filming against a green screen. “Okay, you look over and then this thing is going over there” is how she described her Avengers experience.
We ended up talking about possible blooper worthy moments from Delivery Man. “No, there weren’t” but then we reminded her of the blogger song she and Vince made up. At one point as they were waiting for the scene to be set up, Vince made a joke about “hope the bloggers aren’t listening in” and made up this hilarious ditty (which sorry I can’t remember.)
All of us laughed and encouraged her to use her pull to get the “blogger song” included in the DVD when it gets released.
I am looking forward to checking out Cobie and Vince in DELIVERY MAN out in theaters on November 22nd!
