The World’s Largest Dinosaurs Exhibit at the Museum of Natural History

May 3, 2011 by NYCSingleMom Filed Under: Travel

Mamenchisauraus, A saurapod dinosaur @Museum of Natural History

Dinosaur lovers, the Museum of Natural History newest exhibition features Mamenchisaurus, a super-sized 60 – foot long sauropod, one of the largest animals ever to walk the Earth. Your kids will have the chance to examine life-sized bones, muscles and internal organs of these long neck wonders, in addition to learning how their colossal bodies functioned.

After our recent visit to view the butterfly exhibit and fan favorite, the Haydon planetarium, we couldn’t wait to put our paleontology hats on and excavate fossils in a replicated dig site. The interactive station at the end of the exhibition introduces visitors to how dinosaurs are discovered in the field and what fun it was, it is the best thing about the exhibit. What kid doesn’t want to don, big glasses and dig in the dirt to find a fossilized dinosaur like a cool paleontologist. If anything, my daughter just loved saying she was  a paleontologist.

We learned a lot about these massive sauropods. Here are some fun facts:

  • The Mamenchisaurus eats over 1,000 pounds of food a day.

  • Sauropods had the longest necks and longest tails of any known dinosaurs.
  • Many sauropods grew new teeth as often as once a month, as old ones wore out.

My kids were so disappointed we missed the event but my back was hurting way too much from spring cleaning. I’m getting old! Lol
