Helping the World Wide Fund Maybe

July 26, 2011 by NYCSingleMom Filed Under: Single Mom Daily Life

The Diner

Every parent hopes that their child will proactively volunteer to help those less fortunate than themselves and I thought that this weekend might be that day. Hah, I was wrong.

My daughter and her BFF decided to “open” a diner. I asked my daughter why they were opening a diner and her response was “So we can raise money for the World Wide Fund. ” Thinking she had no Idea what the WWF was, I asked “Do you know what the WWF is?”

“Yes, they help endangered animals,” said with a bit of a patronizing tone and off she went to create the diner menu.

Diner Menu

About an hour later, handing me the menu, she wanted know what I wanted to order. I opted for the turkey and cheese sandwich. They seem to be doing fine making the sandwich by themselves so I let them run wild in the kitchen. Then my daughter comes out and announces”that will be $2.50 for the sandwich.”  I answered, “I might not have $2.50. Don’t I get a family discount?”

“No, she huffed, ” we are trying to raise money to help the endangered animals. No, money, no food.”

Needless to say I went to get my money and paid my tab. Thinking I was home free, my daughter walked past with MY sandwich. “Where are you going with my sandwich?”

“You have to pick it up at the Diner” she replied closing the Diner door.

So I went to pick up my order. “You need to ring the bell” she and her BFF both yelled at me. Jeez, what sticklers, right!! I pushed the doorbell and finally my daughter gave me my sandwich. I must admit it was quite yummy, well worth my $2.50.

The funny thing is after she charged my daughter’s BFF’s  parents for their lunches, I heard them splitting up the money. I kept waiting for both of them to ask about donating the money but alas nothing.

I have a feeling we were scammed. I formally apologize to the WWF, maybe next year.
