Happy Birthday President Obama #44turns55
It’s hard to believe that President Obama the 44th President of the United States turns 55 today. It seems like yesterday that my daughter and I attended his first inauguration. And for this reason, I am very excited to see the upcoming SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU movie that will be in theaters August 26.
SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU is a movie inspired by Barack and Michelle Obama’s first date and recounts the eventful summer day in 1989 when a young law firm associate named Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) tried to woo lawyer Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) during a daylong date
SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU was all the buzz at this year’s Sundance Festival and I have been waiting for months to see. From the trailer I have seen, there is chemistry from the two leads and the conversation they have as they wander through Chicago is smart and funny. I know many will think this is a “date night” movie but it’s more than that in my opinion. Forgetting that the people they portray are now iconic and famous, it’s nice to see a movie with two black leads who are just enjoying a date and allowing them to have an interesting conversation without all the nonsense one sees in other so-called “romantic comedy” movies.
I also like that it shows that movies don’t have to be all action or rock em sock em robots. And frankly that it’s not a movie that is violent, drug focused or showcasing people living a hard scrabble life. I love that that it’s an engaging movie with two positive black role models. I for one can not wait to see it.
And who doesn’t want to see the the site of Barack and Michelle’s first kiss outside of an ice cream parlor.
