Riding the Brooklyn Flyer and I all I get is Laughter #ParentingFail #ConeyIsland

July 7, 2013 by NYCSingleMom Filed Under: Single Mom Daily Life

I hate amusement parks or should I be more specific, I hate amusement park rides. Unlike a lot of people, I do not get a rush or thrill from dangling upside down or enjoy the feeling of dropping down a 85 foot incline and don’t get me started about Motion Simulator Rides (Yes, I am talking about you Mission:Space at Epcot.)

Luna Park Coney Island Brooklyn Flyer

This hatred for rides makes it difficult as a single mom who has to “go on” all the rides with a daughter who is the exact opposite. My daughter has no fear about going on roller coasters, or rides that drop stories from the air and does it with a smile on her face.

The first time we went to Disney World, I pretty much had to go on every ride with her but when we came to Expedition Everest at Disney World, I said NO. No way was I going on a ride with a 80 foot curving drop but she was tall enough and was game enough to go alone. Yes, alone and she went 4 times in a row.

So this summer, we headed out to Coney Island which has numerous amusement parks.  Admittedly, I was game to go on some of the rides with my daughter.  One of the rides, I said yes to was the Brooklyn Flyer at Luna Park. Now from my perspective, it seemed like a fun ride, sit in a chair flying around and be able to see Coney Island at 100 feet in the air.  Wrong, Wrong, and WRONG!

To say that I was freaked out is an understatement. I was screaming hysterically. No I know how people who have a fear of flying feel. And what was my daughter doing while I was freaking out, laughing at me and I mean laughing at me.

I was screaming at her, “Stop Talking” while she kept asking me “What’s wrong, why are you freaking out?”. Did I mention she was laughing at me?

I was just trying to concentrate on NOT having a breakdown  so high in the air flying around so fast at that height. This insanity went on for what I felt was forever all while yelling at my daughter “I don’t like you, stop laughing and STOP talking!” I thought saying, “I don’t like you!” would upset her so much she would stop talking. This only made her laugh more and keep talking.

When we landed, I had to sit down and relax so I could let my heart stop racing. I am sure my blood pressure was sky rocketing.

And my daughter, she went off to take another spin laughing hysterically about my “freak out.”

Even now, she can’t help herself from reliving the incident and laughing at me, reiterating my freakout. I, of course, like to remind her what a great mom I am for even going on the ride with her.

Ha! her reaction is just to laugh even harder.

So when she writes her tell-all, I am going to bring up how supportive I was by going on the Brooklyn Flyer ride.

Do you have a story that you chose to go along with your child and regretted it?

I am like you and dislike rides! MY mom however loves rides and always wants someone to go on them with her

Your daughter is a hoot! Sounds like she had a blast. My kids all love those thrill rides, too. When I was younger I could handle any kind of ride, but not so much now. Middle aged moms and rides don’t mix well!

The funny thing is that there are tons of middle age moms who still love rides.

My kids are still very small, so we haven’t had anything like that happen yet, but I’m sure it will happen one day. I have always loved amusement park rides, but they just don’t seem to agree with me anymore. Everything I try lately makes me feel so sick! When the kids are older, I’m sure they’ll expect me to ride with them, and I’ll want to say yes. I guess I’ll just have to do it before lunch 🙂

      Yes, avoid food before rides

I have never been to coney island, but it sure looks like fun! I don’t know if I could handle all of the rides though…

No, because I’m like your daughter. I love going on rides and being scared. I’ll be the one making my scared daughter go on rides with me when she’s a little older.

I hate amusement rides also. Instead of screaming, I laugh hysterically. About 3 yrs ago my daughter wanted me to go on a ride with her and I told her I didn’t want to but she begged so I did. Well that was the last time she ever asked me. My laugh freaked her out so much, she’d rather go on these rides by herself than take me with her.
