Just in case you are sick of reruns, there is still plenty of good summer shows out there for your viewing pleasure.
Here is New York City Single Mom’s Top 4 Summer TV Shows:
1. In Plain Sight (USA Network – Sundays @ 10 p.m.) – It’s original, I will have to say. Since when has there been a show, that revolves around U.S. Marshall Service, Albuquerque, New Mexico and WITSEC (Witness Security aka Witness Protection.) None. The show stars, Mary McCormack, formerly of the West Wing who plays U.S. Marshall, Mary Shannon and Frederick Mann as her counterpart, Marshall Mann (notice play on words, I love when he introduces himself.) I have to say that I am intrigued by the main character and her relationships both professional and personal as well as the interesting plot lines about the witnesses they have to protect. Not too many scenes of Albuquerque. Is Albuquerque nice? I can’t tell from the show and do wonder why they chose the location. Oh I forgot, Mary’s hot baseball player boyfriend, Raphael Ramirez played by Christian de al Fuente.
2. Leverage (TNT – Wednesdays @ 9 p.m. The second season starts Wednesday, July 15) I watched this last season and it has grown on me. At it’s core, it is a Robin Hood drama. A former insurance executive played by Timothy Hutton, whose dying child was denied medical care because his insurance company would approve an “experimental” procedure that would save his life puts together a team of talented grifters to help victimized citizens get back at “greedy” companies. The team includes an expert thief (with trust issues), a retrieval specialist (aka ex- military, gun for hire), computer expert (for once played by the cool black guy) and very attractive grifter known for her disguises. This show is fun, witty, well -written and skillfully acted by the team. I try not too think to hard about all the machinations and cons that are happening and just let it flow because if If did think a bit, I could see the end coming but I just choose sit back and enjoy the ride.
3. Psych – (USA Network, Fridays @10 p.m. New season begins Aug 7) – The original Psychic detective (and so much better than the Mentalist). It pains me that this show does not get Mentalist ratings. If it were on one of the three big networks, it would be in the top 10, instead of the Mentalist. Psych stars James Roday as Sean Spencer and Dule Hill as his childhood friend Burton “Gus” Guster. Spencer is not really a psychic but hyper observant person who was drilled by his police officer father to notice the smallest details. He begins working for the police force after being accused of a crime. The chemistry between Roday and Hill is what makes the show. Roday is the goofy one and Hill is the uptight, smart one. What’s not to like, it’s funny, great 70’s and 80’s pop cultural references, Santa Barbara setting, and includes Corbin Bernsen (yes, Arnie Becker from LA Law) as Sean’s dad.
4. Royal Pains (USA Network – Fridays @ 10 p.m.) Recently fired ER doctor goes to the Hamptons for a weekend and ends up a “Concierge” doctor. A concierge doctor you say. After Michael Jackson, how surprised are we that there are doctors for hire. Hank is a little different because he serves both the wealthy and the poor of the Hamptons. The show stars Mark Feuerstein as Dr. Hank Snow. I like the show because of the Hampton houses. That alone would worth watching except I long fora glimpse Campbell Scott playing the cool, mysterious, German gazillionaire (why german and why does he have shark tank in the basement, anyone?)
I am sure I have missed a few new or returning shows. There is only so many hours in the week.
