The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is one of the many MUST SEE Activities in Washington, D.C.  The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial was dedicated on October 16, 2011 to commemorate the  48th anniversary of Dr. King’s now famous and historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. For history buffs,  the memorial was supposed to be dedicated on August 28 , 2011 on the actual 48th anniversary but the ceremony was postponed due to Hurricane Irene.

Master Lei Yixin is the sculptor of the memorial which is located between the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials on the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. The memorial is  30-foot tall and is made out granite,  costing $120 million to build.

There are  fourteen quotes on the Inscription Wall. On the side of this statue is a quote from  the “I Have a Dream” speech  “Out of the Mountain of Despair, a Stone of Hope.” For more Martin Luther King. Jr. Quotes.

If you are visiting Washington, DC, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is a must see attraction and is spectacular up close and is quite moving given that it is the first National park that is dedicated to a person of color. I would definitely take a day spending walking around the Tidal Basin and take in all the memorials including Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial. Just beautiful and you will get some amazing photographs of the memorials, the Tidal Basin, the Washington Monument plus take in all the glory of the history of the U.S. And they are all FREE.
