Stevie Nick’s Landslide Provides New Meaning – 4th Grade is Officially Over

Seeing a story about Stevie Nicks in a recent New York Magazine reminded me of all the great songs in the Fleetwood Mac catalog which I am sure you have a favorite.  While I love Stevie in all her gypsy, scarf wearing, living life to the fullest rock star chick glory,  I was reminded of how the song Landslide’s (which Stevie wrote) meaning has changed for me since I became a mother.

Just in case you forgot the words, this particular passage is what made me stop and reflect!

Well, I’ve been afraid of changing

But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I’m getting older too

Before I became a mother,  Landslide was just another great Fleetwood Mac song that you sang to but the words really never had any meaning (for me.) I remember distinctly the first time the song really had an impact. During my daughter’s pre-school graduation ceremony,  Landslide was the song that played throughout the montage of the children as they progressed from babies to age 5.

By the end of the montage, there was not a dry eye in the house and I’m sure there were parents in the room who felt the same way about hearing the song really for the first time.

I look back on that moment and in reading the article and I am brought back to that day 5 years ago as my daughter was heading off to Kindergarten and how it seemed like yesterday, I got the call that changed my life forever and now  she is off to kindergarten.

So here  we are as my daughter ends the 4th grade thinking where has the time gone again since that pre-school graduation ceremony.

I know she has one more year before middle school but 5th grade will be a turning point of sorts for both of  us.

5th grade means that we will be touring middle schools finally bringing a conceptual thought to reality
5th grade means my daughter will be getting closer to puberty (scary!!)
5th grade means that all the friends she has made will be a memory unless they end up of at the same school
5th grade means we will leave the confines of our close knit school community and I probably won’t see moms that I have become friends with over the last few years
5th grade means deciding on a sleep away camp
5th grade means my daughter will be able to leave the school campus one day a week for lunch (don’t worry it’s highly controlled)
5th grade means my daughter will be given the opportunity to walk from the corner into school by herself

So not only is this a turning point for my daughter but for me as she becomes more independent and wants to be spend more time with her friends or online.

So forgive me as I sit and listen to the words of Landslide again and have a good cry!
