When I think about how far we have come in that last 10 years, it always reminds me of story my late father told me. And let me say this my father was one of those let me tell you when I was young “parent” that has to tell you hard their life was and frankly, it was.
At one point in my life, Levi cords were all the rage so I asked for money to buy them so I could fit in with the cool kids. Some things never change, right. Cords one day, today, Lucky Brand/7 of Mankind jeans.
Before he responded, he gave me “WTF look, (note my father rarely ever cursed) and then said, “I remember when cordoroy fabric was a poor man’s fabric and now I have to shell out big bucks so you can be in style.”
Ironically, no matter how much we want to be different from our parents, we end saying the same nutty things to our child.
So darling daughter, here is an ode to all the things you will never experience:
- Buying an album for the cover art or even buying an album at all, unless you become a DJ.
- VCR – I, personally will miss the VCR. Who doesn’t remember having to call up the company to figure out how to install the darn thing. And all those tapes taking up space in your house plus just trying to remember to record things and then accidently recording over something. Good riddance and thank god for the DVR (and for the record, the phone/cable companies should send royalty checks/thank Tivo for leading the way because they are so not the leaders of new technology.)
- The CD/Sony Walkman – Remember the days of taking along CDs everywhere you go. Our kids will only know how to download songs/shows/movies/podcasts from iTunes. And if you didn’t have the Sony Walkman, you were not cool. Oddly, Sony only just stopped production of the Sony Walkman this year. Who was buying them, I wonder??? P.S. I still have the Sony Sports Walkman – remember the ubiquitous bright yellow one. I keep it for two reasons, nostalgia and in the event of an emergency (it has a radio and it was a life saver to the outside world during the 2003 blackout.)
- Telephones with cords – Remember those. I have to say that I actually have 2 in my house for emergency purposes only. After the 2003 blackout, I found out that wireless phones don’t work in an emergency, you need a phone with a good old-fashioned cord to connect to the outside world. And for those of you weren’t here for 9/11 or the 2003 blackout and only have a cellphone, they don’t work in emergency situations that impact the city.
I know there a gazillion more things our children will never experience and I would love to hear your top four things your child will never experience.
one my friends added
Computer screens with bubble butts
Cars without air condition
Cars that require you to manually roll down window
I found this post to be of some great interest. Everything you said is true and more, when my kids found my old telephone with the dial buttons per say, they thought it was the funniest thing in the world. They couldn’t figure how to work it for a good minute or two, oh what a laugh!!!
