Arrival Review

ARRIVAL starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner is based on the Ted Chiang’s short story ‘Story of Your Life.’ The story begins when a mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, leading to an an elite team being brought together to investigate the spacecraft.  As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Louise Banks  (Amy Adams) and the team race against time for answers – and to find them. Banks leads the way taking  chances that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.

Science fiction movies over the years fall into the well-executed genre or what the heck is this?. ARRIVAL stands in the middle. By far the most interesting part of the movie are the opening sequences with the introduction of the characters and the spacecrafts.  It actually reminded me of Will Smith’s Independence when mysterious spacecrafts show up and park themselves all over the world. Those first encounters with the aliens  as they try to communicate via inkblot type responses are intense and exciting. What do they mean? Will the linguist be able to communicate back? Are they friendly? What do they want?  Somehow I found this to be somewhat slow. I know many will think the movie has a deeper meaning with Louise the linguist asking the big questions and finding herself. This type of science fiction movie will either move you to ponder it or move on. I personally found it riveting and intense as we powered to the end.
