Captain America – The Winter Soldier without a doubt has a built in fan base of comic fanatics so that it is number one at the box office. Since I am not a true fan so I came with no expectations. Lo and behold, Captain America – The Winter Soldier is by far is the best Marvel movie to date.
SYNOPSIS: After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s “Captain America: The
Winter Soldier” finds Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, living quietly in Washington, D.C. and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever -widening conspiracy while fighting off assailants sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy — the Winter Soldier.
What makes this movie the best is without a doubt is the script. You read the synposis above but for once the screenwriters put forth a political thriller with real world ideas and hey these are things we have to think about now. The storyline is a bit more complicated than most action pictures which I liked and draws from the World War II era from which Steve Rogers originates.
On top of the script, the cast is exceptional. Chris Evans has finally come of age in this role and is the perfect lock-jawed, moral and loyal Captain America. His 1950’s morals is what sets him apart from other Super heroes. Scarlett Johansson is the perfect Black Widow. They actually give her some witty lines plus she is not some wimpy girl that needs to be rescued, she holds her own in the fighting department. In fact, one of the reasons I love about the Marvel movies are the number of kick-ass women who can hold their own. Another welcome addition to Captiain America is Anthony Mackie as the Falcon who friendship with Chris Evans is wonderful. Plus it’s nice to see a little diversity in the Marvel world.
Of course, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury is not only a fan favorite but just adds punch to the movie. Plus did I mention Robert Redford makes his first appearance in a Marvel movie. Talking about adding punch and gravitas to a movie. I would have loved to been his agent when they pitched Redford the role.
And finally, I have to give a shout out to Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier. This is a great villain that makes you think about loyalty.
It goes without saying that there is plenty of action, cars blowing up, fight scenes and car chases but it’s done really really well.
If you are action picture fan, Marvel fan or like political thrillers, I recommend Captain America – The Winter Soldier.
My only comment is if you have younger tweens, this may be too complicated a storyline and admittedly, there is a lot of fight scenes and the body count is high. I am sure there will be some article that counts up the number of kills because it’s high. I am seriously debating if I will take my 11 year old to see it because of the violence and complicated storyline. Remember there are a lot of World War II references so you will have to explain a lot of history to your child to help them understand this storyline

I can’t wait to see this one. No one in the house wants to go though, so I might go solo (first time I’ve done that in years!).
