When I received the invite to visit the Delivery Man movie set, I was more than thrilled especially when I found out that two of my favorite actors, Vince Vaughn and How I Met Your Mother’s Cobie Smulders would be on set for interviews.
So what is Delivery Man about, well it’s not what you think. There is delivering going on… DreamWorks Pictures’ “Delivery Man” stars Vince Vaughn as an affable underachiever David Wozniak, whose anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years earlier resulted in 533 children. David must now embark on a journey that leads him to discover not only his true self but also the father that he could become.
I will be honest, when they said we would be visiting the set, I thought that the filming would be inside. Wrong, wrong! We were told that the principal actors would be doing scenes outside which surprised me since the night before our visit, it was raining and not the drizzly kind of rain.
Luckily, the day we were scheduled to visit the set, the weather turned out to be slightly overcast but drizzling so we went to our 7:30am set call.
When we arrived at the set which was located on 47th Street between 2nd and Third Avenues, there were seats with headsets all set up which I thought was hilarious. Ten chairs lined up in front of a director’s chair and a monitor on a midtown side street. You can’t get any more New York, surreal and movie making all rolled into one.
While we waited for Vince Vaughn and Cobie Smulders to show up on set, Director Ken Scott came over to chat. Scott for those not in the know (and that would be me) is the original co-writer and director of the original film, Starbuck on which Delivery Man is based.
Apparently DreamWorks saw something in the original, Scott’s direction and voice to turn the helm over to him for a big Hollywood movie starring a huge talent like Vince Vaughn.
During our interview with him, Scott spoke about being the original director and how remaking it for American audiences was yes, indeed a unique situation. According to Scott, “So I had the chance to see the original movie with many American audiences, and I saw their reactions and I really thought that it was a movie, it was a story that could really connect with an American audience. So basically, it’s the same story, yet it’s just integrated into the American culture.”
I found watching the stand-ins practice where the stars would be placed so they could get the right camera angles so very interesting and a great behind the scenes experience. This went on numerous times, so much so, I lost count how many times, the Vince Vaughn stand-in had to give the restaurant owner a piece of paper and then walk away, that’s pretty much all he did.
Finally, star on the set. Vince Vaughn arrived all bundled up due to the weather. As we were miked up, we could hear and watch him run the scene over and over again. I must admit, I have read a gazillion times how being on set is a long and somewhat arduous process.
And now to see it up and close and personal was quite eye opening. I really could not tell you how many different times or ways, Vince Vaughn and Cobie Smulders said their lines but it was a lot. Finally, after about 20 minutes or more, a scene that probably will last 30 seconds was finished.
Then it was time to setup the next scene which probably took another 30 minutes and because of the overcast nature of the day, there was definitely a lot of lighting needs to be done.
Stay tuned for interviews with funny man Vince Vaughn and his co-star Cobie Smulders.
