Wake up and Go with Disney Junior breakfast during BlogHer 12 Conference provided an update of Disney Junior’s Fall Line Up. love Disney Junior which yes my daughter has outgrown but she occasionally watches Jake and Never Land Pirates and was excited by Doc McStuffins arrival. It’s hard to believe that Disney Junior only launched in February 2011 with a daily programming block on Disney Channel, and on March 23, 2012, a 24-hour Disney Junior channel launched in the U.S.
So what’s new!
- The big news is the introduction of Disney’s first little girl princess, Sofia the First. The magical, music-filled animated series is set in the storybook world of Sofia (voiced by “Modern Family’s” Ariel Winter), who starts out life as a regular girl, but when her mother marries the king, she is suddenly whisked off to live in a castle alongside her new step-father, King Roland II, and step-siblings, Amber and James. I loved that Sofia is a girl and a princess who has to navigate her new life. I think this will have a definite appeal for young kids as life is not about being a Royal but is so much more. My favorite footnote about Sofia the First is that Tim Gunn of Project Runway fame is the voice of Sofia’s butler. Too cool! Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess will premiere in fall 2012 as an animated movie with the series debuting in early 2013.
- Doc McStuffins is a show that I wished had been launched when my daughter was younger. The show is an imaginative animated series about Doc McStuffins, a six-year-old girl who communicates with and heals stuffed animals and broken toys out of her backyard playhouse clinic.
- This show will go down as one of reasons little black kids will want to become doctors. It has to be said that you don’t realize that there is a color gap on television until a show like this is introduced and then executives go “Duh, why didn’t we do this earlier.” That said, Disney’s head of programming noted that while Doc McStuffins only debuted in March 2012, it became Disney Channel’s #1 weekday series premiere of all time in kids 2-5 and the #1 preschool launch in cable TV history among adults 18-49. Year to date, Doc McStuffins is a huge hit with kids, rated as the #1 cable preschool series among kids and girls 2-5 AND the #1 co-viewed cable preschool TV show among Disney Junior and Nickelodeon preschool block series among moms and kids watching together. That is pretty impressive that the show transcends all demographics.
The other big news is that Disney Junior will be launching Night Light, programming aimed at parents who are taking care of kids who wake up late at night or sick and can’t sleep but don’t have appropriate television that they can watch with their children at 3am. Fantastic idea!
Finally, we were updated one of the most popular Disney Junior shows: Jake and the Never Land Pirates on September 19, 2012, Disney Junior will premiere the primetime special “Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Jake Saves Bucky,” in which Peter Pan returns to Never Land once again to help Jake and his crew win back their ship after losing it in a race against Captain Hook and the Jolly Roger which is timed to International Talk Like A Pirate Day.
