Arts and Crafts Activities @Duane Reade

[ 1 ] January 17, 2012 |

The Winter weekends are all about arts and crafts, reading, baking and of course,  I would be fibbing, if I did not include watching television and playing video games.

That said, I am lucky my daughter still loves to come up with arty projects to do. I would like to say I am one of those Type A, arts and crafty moms but alas, you have come to the wrong place. While my daughter enjoys spontaneously doing an art project, which means I am am not always prepared with a closet full of paint, brushes, paper. Ah no, my little one bedroom apartment’s closets store clothes, shoes, and action figures (yes, action figures), there’s no room for arts and crafts.

So when my daughter announced on Friday, right before the Martin Luther King three-day weekend,

“Mommy, I want to make a special card for Aunt S and W (her boyfriend, now fiance)  that I am excited about them getting married.”  W just proposed before the Christmas. Let’s all say “ahhhh.” We are very happy for them both.

“Fine, feel free.”  I responded, big deal

Friday night, she starts tearing around the house and I am looking at her like what are you doing.

I am looking for  the paintbrushes and I think I am out of paint.” She tells me like it’s my fault.

Well, look in the kitchen and I am sure you still have paint leftover and that’s where the paintbrushes are.” I say trying to enjoy the news.

Nope, I looked.” Miss Know-It all says.

I get up and started looking around and yep, she’s right, not a paintbrush or paints, in sight and don’t ask me where they all went as I really thought we had tons of paintbrushes and paint leftover from the last spontaneous project.

Now this is Friday and I am thinking where am I going to go on Saturday to stock up on both items. As it was late, I just table this errand until the morning.

The next morning, my daughter and I had to run to the Duane Reade for another reason all together, I wanted to make home-made pizza  which is another activity we like to do in the winter but did not feel like making pizza sauce, so  I knew Duane Reade sold spaghetti sauce and for me that’s a perfect substitute for making sauce. Or would the perfect word be lazy.

While we were in the store, I thought why not check out their supply section because you never know what you will find. And guess what, I found two perfect items for our arts and crafts projects,  a Crayola Art Supply Kit full of paint, markers, crayons AND a bag of paint brushes. What I loved about the kit was it was all there in one place.

We were both excited and so my daughter spent the next hour (or it seemed like it) making her masterpiece for the lovely intended couple.

Although a teacher, I, too, am not an arts and crafts fan. We have the same Crayola kit and my oldest 2 can be busy for hours creating art projects.
