@DuaneReade Make Up Essentials for A New Me #DReade

[ 0 ] January 4, 2012 |

A New Year, a New Me. Sound Familiar. Another year comes around and I am onto a gazillion resolutions that I will break by February or more likely by the middle of January.

This year, I am going to take a different route.  Instead of making resolutions, I am going to work on just being healthier, both spiritually and physically.

Step 1 to a healthier me,  a more regimented skin care regimen. Lucky for me, I am product of  two groups with skin that defies aging, the Japanese and African-Americans.  That said, I do take pretty horrible care of my skin. Seriously, I barely take my make up off at night or even moisturize. And SPF, forget it about it.

Step 2 to a healthier me,  look better when I leave the house, meaning at least look like I put some effort into looking pretty, oh so pretty and  choosing make-up essentials that I would actually be able to keep up with on a daily basis.

Kim Kardashian, I am not with her celebrity make up deals so one of the most important requirements in pursuing a healthier me is  not to spend a ton of money in my pursuit.

So off to Duane Reade I go because as it has been written in countless fashion and beauty magazines, brands sold at drugstores are just as good as those sold in major department stores.

As I wandered around my local Duane Reade, I had delusions of looking like some of the moms I see at school who are soooo put together.  I realized as I took another lap around the store, with my inner voice was yelling “Be Realistic.”  Did I really think I would put on, eye shadow, mascara and foundation everyday? Ah no!

The last time, I did the full make up routine was when I lived in Florence where I refused to look frumpy next to Italian women who never leave the house without looking put together.

So the make up routine needed to be quick, quick, quick and sustainable over time. I do admit that I was really impressed with the selection of brands not just the usual brands like Revlon, L’Oreal, Coty, Cover Girl, Oil of Olay, etc.  but Duane Reade also sells PurMinerals. But that’s not all, Duane Reade also sells high-end  skin care  lines from Avene, La Roche-Posay and Lierac, all well-known French brands.

I ended up with  Burt’s Bees Sensitive  Skin Line including the facial cleanser, moisturizing cream and night cream because my combination skin does get more sensitive and dry in the winter and I love Burt’s Bees in general. I will let you know how they work out after I give it a whirl.

On to my make-up essentials routine. I figured, I would start slow and maybe work my way up as time goes on.  My proposed make up routine included a moisturizer, concealer, eye liner, shaped eyebrows and lipstick. I ended buying a Wet N Wild eye-liner (only 99 cents); Revlon lipstick and Sally Hansen “now brow” kit to go along with my skin care regimen. I bought the eyebrow kit because my brows while they don’t need a lot of maintenance really does make a difference when they are shaped and filled in with a pencil.

Now that I have everything, it now means I have to make a commitment to move forward and try and try to do my skin and make-up regimen on a daily basis. Wish me luck!!
