American Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcracker Review

My daughter just finished performing in The Nutcracker of which I was most proud of her performance. But just two words to describe her dance school’s version of The Nutcracker, modern and contemporary with barely a tutu in sight. It is no not like the traditional Nutcrackers that I am used to.

So I was excited for us to see the  Alexei Ratmansky’s new version of The Nutcracker performed by American Ballet Theatre being staged at BAM Brooklyn. And this version of The Nutcracker does not disappoint. As the lights dim and Tchaikovsky’s beautiful score filled the air it brought chills and memories of years past.  Our favorite character was the little white mouse (played by this adorable little boy)who plays tricks on the household staff and pops up on unlikely scenes. At one point, his mouse popped off but he kept going, a real trooper. Too cute. The numerous scenes with main ballet dancers was just beautifully done and choreographed. It’s the reason why we all go to ballets. Just so amazing.  The entire Nutcracker form Clara leading the audience on  dreamlike journey amid colorful, larger-than-life scenery, magical toy soldiers, mischievous mice, sparkling snowflakes, and a glittering Christmas tree is so worth seeing. This was just an amazing production that you and your children will remember for years to come.
