Martin Scorsese’s Hugo in 3 D is a delightfully magical film for adults

[ 0 ] November 21, 2011 |

Hugoin 3D directed by legendary director Martin Scorsese, starring Sir Ben Kingsley, Chloe Moretz, Asa Butterfield, Emily Mortimer and Sasha Baron Cohen is everything you want in a kid’s movie: it’s beautifully acted, has a great storyline with characters you care about and are interested in, well-acted, has stunning cinematography , and finally, a 3D movie that actually is worth watching.

But here’s the bad news, Scorsese made a kid’s movie for adults.

Synoposis: Hugo is the astonishing adventure of a wily and resourceful boy whose quest to unlock a secret left to him by his father will transform Hugo and all those around him, and reveal a safe and loving place he can call home.  Hugo is based upon the award winning book entitled The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.

So what attracted the director of Taxi Driver, Good, Fellas, The Departed, Martin Scorsese to the book. Scorsese remembers, “I was given the book about four years ago, and it was one of those experiences…I sat down and read it completely, straight through.  There was an immediate connection to the story of the boy, his loneliness, his association with the cinema, with the machinery of creativity.  The mechanical objects in the film, including cameras, projectors, and automatons, make it possible for Hugo to reconnect with his father.  And mechanical objects make it possible for the filmmaker Georges Méliès to reconnect with his past, and with himself.”

Reading how Scorsese became involved with book sounds just so Hollywood. That said, I wished that I had seen the movie with my daughter so I could hear her opinion to truly gage  what kind of reception it get amongst the tween set.  I saw this movie in a theatre full of adult movie critics who clapped at the end. I even heard one twenty-something critic exclaim,   “I loved it.”

That may well be true but the big question is would I recommend it?  Yes and No. I truly believe this movie will be a hit and a classic with adults, parents and kids when it is released on dvd, it’s that good.

The 7-8 age group will love the adventuresome nature of the story coupled with Hugo’s working the clocks and of course, the automotan (mechanical figures, powered by inner clockwork, which appear to perform functions on their own)  while older kids will connect with the deeper meaning of Hugo and Papa George’s life. The movie introduces us to the extraordinary world of George Méliès , undoubtedly one of the most influential filmakers in history by showing his famous masterpiece “Le voyage dans La Lune (“A Trip to the Moon”). Doesn’t sound familiar,

Director George Méliès - Famous Scene from A Trip to the Moon

you probably have only seen the one scene from the movie of the rocket hitting the moon in the eye (see left photo.)

But in the movie theatre, I am not so sure that kids will be willing to sit through a 2 hour  plus the previews long, I hope they can and will.

Hugo in 3 D opens in theaters, November 23, 2012.

Here is the trailer from the movie.
