Broadway’s Godspell Review
Recently, I went to see the legendary rock musical Godspell in a brand new production at the Circle in the Square theatre. The show is written by Stephen Schwartz, the Grammy® and Academy Award®-‐winning composer of WICKED and PIPPIN. Godspell’s story is one of a timeless tale of friendship, loyalty and love.
The ensemble of Broadway’s best, including Hunter Parrish (Showtime’s “Weeds”, Spring Awakening), Anna Maria Perez de Tagle (“Hannah Montana”, “Camp Rock”) and Telly Leung (“Glee”, Wicked, Rent), performs the greatest story ever told.
I really enjoyed the show with it’s popular hits Day By Day, Learn Your Lessons Well and Turn Back, O Man. The ensemble cast was super funny, talented and wowed with with their musical voices. What I liked about Godspell is that teaches a valuable lessons through its parables but without being overly religious. It’s a great way for children (of certain age) and background learn good lessons about how to behave. I will admit that I thought my daughter and her BFF would really be engaged and learn from the parables. Wrong. Oddly, they liked the play and the music but somewhere along the way I could tell by the fact they were whispering with each other that there weren’t that engaged.
Because the theatre is in uniquely shaped in a circle and there are not bad seats in the house, the production can invite the audience to be a part of the show which I think makes it much more interesting.
This is wonderful production I would recommend for any theatre goer and will lift your spirits and have you humming “Day by Day.”
