Antonio Banderas Stars in Puss in Boots – Best Movie of the Year

[ 2 ] October 28, 2011 |

Admittedly, I was not enthusiastic about seeing Puss in Boots but I was totally wrong. This by far, is one of the funniest movies of the year and for both kids and adults is worth seeing.

Synopsis: Long before he even met Shrek, the notorious fighter, lover and outlaw Puss in Boots (ANTONIO BANDERAS) becomes a hero when he sets off on an adventure with the tough and street smart Kitty Softpaws (SALMA HAYEK) and the mastermind Humpty Dumpty (ZACH GALIFIANAKIS) to save his town. Complicating matters along the way are the notorious outlaws Jack and Jill (BILLY BOB THORNTON and AMY SEDARIS), who will do anything to see that Puss and his band do not succeed. This is the true story of The Cat, The Myth, The Legend…and, of course,

What I loved about Puss in Boots:

  • Puss in Boots is an extremely appealing character, that has  a bit of the devil in him but has a  tremendous heart.
  • A well-written back story that ties together  how he came to wear boots. Ultimately it’s a story about brotherhood, revenge, redemption and of course, romance.
  • The chemistry between the lead characters especially with street smart Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek). I loved that the stars of Roberto Rodriguez’s El Mariachi are   starring  together again. Their characters may be animated but they do exude chemistry that permeates the screen and defies explanation. And it makes sense since some of the scenes were done with both actors in the same room which is not normally done in animinated features.
  • The big sad kitty eyes – how can you resist?
  • This is one of most visually appealing movies that I have seen in a long time and for some one who hates 3D, the 3D actually makes the much more engaging.
  • Integrating nursery-rhyme characters which has been done in Shrek, but the characters are definitely more twisted and up ends our notion of certain characters. Jack and Jill as outlaws and not very pretty is hysterical and there is Humpty Alexander Dumpty. The name alone is enough to make you laugh. Even the kids get it.
  • The Dance Off and the music used in the scene. I liked that they introduced the younger set to flamenco and latin ballroom dancing as well as music that is associated with those type of dances. The choreography in the Dance scene is true to the dances and truly hilarious. The “Litter Box” move alone is worth the price of admission.
  • And finally,  Antonio Banderas. Without him, there is no Puss in Boots. He exudes passion, fun, charisma, machismo, mystery and adventure in the character.
  • The story works on both the kid level and the adult level. Trust me when I say there were lot of adult references that flew over the kid’s heads.

What I did not like about Puss in Boots?

  • My only criticsm and again, I am sure most kids didn’t get it but in the opening scene it’s obvious that Puss in Boots has had a one stand with a kitty and is chased out. It’s quite subtle but it somehow irked me.

Would I recommend this movie? YES  and even for adults. Dreamworks really outdid themselves and this will definitely up for an Oscar nod.

Great review. My son is dying to see this movie. I want to see it to so we will likely go next week.

I’m not a fan of 3D either (I think it’s over done) but if you say it makes the move better I may consider it.
