Steve Jobs Iconic Black Mock Turtleneck – Fashion Friday

[ 0 ] October 14, 2011 |

If you are follower of Steve Jobs, I personally don’t think he was a fashion trendsetter but over the last few years, Jobs made his own fashion statement with his black mock turtleneck, Levi’s jeans and New Balance Sneakers.

Wonder why he wore the black turtleneck.  After a business trip to visit the late and great Akio Morita, the Sony Chairman and the Sony factories, he noticed the uniforms that the Sony employees wore which was started after World War II when they had no clothes to wear. Morita said that this help bond the employees. And Jobs thought why not do that for Apple employees, so he had the great Issey Miyake make black vests for Apple employees.  How did you think that went over?  He got booed, literally. Can you imagine a group of engineers and programmers wearing black vests.

So what if his employees did not like the uniform idea and so begat his uniform. First it was Issey Miyake turtlenecks and the St. Croix knits turtlenecks. According to St. Croix, Jobs bought enough so that he could wear one everyday.

So you want one too, too late, they are sold out until November 7, according to the St Croix Shop website. As a tribute, the company is donating $20 to cancer research for every block mock turtleneck sold.

And by the way, the reason for why Steve Jobs started wearing the mock turtlenecks comes from Steve Jobs official biographer’s Walter Isaacson.
