Life as a single mom (or just plain moms) can be pretty hectic and stressful. My mother was an incredible person but looking back she was selfless and never did anything for herself. The children came first. I think this was a cultural issue and of course, I did not learn this until I spent time with her family in Japan after her death. In Japan, the mother is pretty much responsible for the health, well-being and education of the child. If your child is a failure, so is the mother.
Yes, I will do anything for my child but from my perspective if you don’t take time for yourself, it’s a little difficult to help your child if your sick, mentally off or just always tired.
So to relieve the stress and just get some mommy time, here a few tips on taking time out for yourself and dammit, you deserve it and no one should make you feel guilty about it.
1. Manicure/pedicure: There is nothing more rejevenating than being pampered. And every so often I really splurge, I pay an extra $10 for a foot massage. Blissful!!
2. Massage: This is far more indulgent than a mani/pedi but the health benefits of lying naked and free from the stress of your life is worth every penny that a masseuse can bring. And 60 minutes is not enough, if you are going to do it, go with 90 minutes.
3. Yoga: Whether its a 15 minute yoga in the morning before my daughter wakes or taking a class. I am never so happy and relaxed then after taking a class.
4. Escaping to the movies: What’s better than being in the dark and indulging in a big bag of caloric popcorn, a coke (yes, a coca-cola not diet coke) and an action picture or romantic comedy. There is nothing more satisfying that sitting in the dark watching six pack abs men as superheroes, Chris Evans anyone? (Captain America, just in case you were wondering.)
5. Heading to bookstore (or library): I love just indulgently reading beauty magazines and the tabloids. If I have more time, I like to get the decorating books and dream a little. Very refreshing and I definitely avoid the children’s book section. Remember it’s all about the me if only for an hour.
Your Turn: How do you relieve stress? and you don’t have to be a mom to respond because no matter the gender, we all have stress.

It’s so true – we can’t truly be there for the others in our lives if we don’t take care of “us” first.
I love to go to the salon and get my hair washed. There’s nothing like strong, nimble fingers massaging my scalp and getting it nice and clean. I love leaving with shiny, bouncy, good-smelling hair. Lifts my whole mood!
Self appreciation must come first from within, it would be impossible to gain relief for yourself if you fail to have it on your own. It’s more likely comparable to having a relief on a very loaded day. Think about things that makes you happy and then do it and you will finally get relief.

I usually relieve stress by just getting on the computer or watching tv. I would love to go get my nails done, but only do this about once a year (usually for my birthday).
