American Museum of Natural History Visit
The American Museum of Natural History is a must see attraction for families visiting New York City. You can easily spend an entire day at the museum which is open year round, except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
On a recent visit, my daughter and I spent the day taking in all the current exhibitions in addition to visiting our favorite parts of the museum, the Fossils Halls filled with the world’s largest collection of vertebrate fossils, the Rose Center for Earth and Science and the Mammals Halls complete with animals from all over the world. We still love seeing the family of elephants.
Starting with the Butterfly Conservatory, one of the museum’s most popular exhibits, we saw a wide variety of butterflies from all over the world in the museums re-created tropical forest environment. Each time, we go, my daughter spends a lot of time trying to get butterflies to land on her finger. Since the odds of that happening are on par with winning the lottery, take advantage of the numerous volunteers to ask questions and hopefully get closer to a butterfly.
We ventured to see IMAX: Sea Rex: A Journey To a Prehistoric World. Basically it’s about underwater sea creatures that pre-date dinosaurs. While we both found the movie interesting, my daughter found it a tad scary. The creatures are ugly, quite monstrous and because this is an IMAX screen the sea creatures appear huge on screen.
Our final exhibition was to see Whoopi Goldberg, just kidding. She narrates Journey to the Stars, a space show that tells the story of how stars were born. After seeing visiting the “Sun,” we made a bee line to the Rose Center. I love that my daughter still gets joy out of the Rose Center. As she gets older she actually learns a little bit more and absorbs more information each time. Of course, she still gets a kick out seeing how much she weighs on Mars.
Even though we were at the museum for most of the day, we missed a lot and the Brain exhibit. Oh well, spring break is around the corner.
