Pierpont Morgan Library for A Ladies Who Lunch Date
Recently, I went to lunch at the Pierpont Morgan Library’s dining room to celebrate my friend C’s birthday. Bet you had no idea that the Library even had a Dining Room, me either since I have never even been to the museum. When I first heard she had decided on the location, my first thought was this is a very “Ladies Who Lunch” place.
Well, needless to say it is a “Ladies Who Lunch” choice if you are old.
Now the four of us are not exactly twenty-something club kids or remotely close but good lord, none of us has white hair either. Literally, the entire restaurant was a sea of white hair and definitely no grandkids in sight.
No future husband in that place, but I digress.
That said, the restaurant is located in the original Morgan family dining room and is very understated as befitting the name Pierpont Morgan. There was absolutely nothing ornate or fancy about the place just very clean and modern looking.
Enough about the room, so how was the food? In a word, delicious. I ordered the slow roasted free range chicken with oatmeal risotto in a fine herb au jus. It was definitely oatmeal but with the consistency you would expect but it did not taste like oatmeal, it actually tasty and flavorful. My friend ordered Shrimp Fricassee and Potato Pancakes. The creme fraiche sauce was just right, light but just enough thickness to really bring the flavor out of the shrimp and pancakes. I followed the incredible meal with Pineapple Tart Tatin which had the right about sweetness. There is also a rotating prix menu base on a current museum exhibition.
The best part of the meal is that we were able to eat at a leisurely pace completely unrushed by the waiter. It’s such a luxury to truly enjoy a meal but this was a joy and I was sad that it had to end.
Wouid I recommend going to the Pierpont Library Dining Room? Yes, if you need the perfect place to take your in-laws, parents or grandparents, the dining room fits the bill. And if you did not figure it out before, I wouldn’t bring your kids unless they are quiet and I mean quite.
